Andheri-Hilfe Bonn

Fighting blindness and its consequences

On 1st July 2006, a new programme has started in Bangladesh:

"Fight against blindness and its consequences". It marks a milestone of the work of Andheri-Hilfe and considerably enlarges its previous action programme of curing blind people.

For the first time, not only previous partners of the "Bangladesh National Society for the Blind" are participating but also several dozens of other partner organisations with which Andheri-Hilfe has cooperated for a long period. These organisations have, since many years, acquired a large experience in initiating impressive social reforms in thousands of villages in Bangladesh.

By generating a network between the various partners in Bangladesh, the work on "blindness and avoidance of blindness" is achieving a degree of social awareness which was unthinkable before.

Consequently, also a larger and more efficient contribution is being added to the programme "Vision 2020". "Vision 2020" - the right to see - is aiming at the target that until the year 2020 the main causes for blindness have been successfully eradicated and that, in particular, for poor people "the right to see" has been fully achieved.

Through an innovative dialogue programme, political decision-makers become aware of their responsibility towards blind people and, consequently, the rights of blind and sight-handicapped people are being strengthened.

Finally, economic support is being given to these people, e.g. credits to start a small business which might enable them to reach a safer economic and social position.
